TNT Opts for Darius Days, Phoenix Taps BJ Johnson for PBA Governors’ Cup

Part of why the recently concluded PBA Commissioner’s Cup was so fascinating and compelling was the cast of reinforcements. The ever-reliable Justin Brownlee led the way, of course, but local hoops fans also got introduced to imports like Bol Bol, Jaylen Johnson, and Cady Lalanne. Now, a new batch of reinforcements is coming in for the Governors’ Cup, with BJ Johnson and Darius Days adding to what is shaping up to be a deep pool of talent.

Days will be reinforcing the TNT Tropang 5G, who have made the Finals in five consecutive conferences. Johnson, on the other hand, will be playing for the Phoenix Fuel Masters, whose first conference under Charles Tiu resulted in a quarterfinals appearance.

Darius Days Fills In for Rondae Hollis-Jefferson

Darius Days is actually one of the first imports enlisted for the PBA Governors’ Cup, with TNT securing the powerhouse forward as early as the Commissioner’s Cup. He will be tasked to anchor the Tropa’s frontcourt while filling in for resident superstar Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who is continuing his recovery from a ruptured Achilles.

Days arrives in the PBA with a reputation for relentless interior toughness and a remarkably smooth outside stroke. Stepping into a TNT squad that demands championship-level consistency is no small task, but the former Louisiana State University standout has spent his entire career defying expectations.

After going undrafted, Darius Days tore through the NBA G League and earned brief regular-season minutes with the Houston Rockets before proving his worth as a premier import across Australia and Japan. He most recently anchored the frontcourt for San-en NeoPhoenix in the Japanese B.League, showcasing the exact type of physical rebounding and pick-and-pop gravity that head coaches dream about.

TNT fans can expect a bruising yet mobile weapon who can easily slide into the Governors’ Cup height limit without sacrificing an ounce of paint presence.

BJ Johnson Looks to Build On Phoenix Momentum

On the other side of the spectrum, Phoenix will be pinning its hopes on the explosive scoring of BJ Johnson. Head coach Charles Tiu confirmed the arrival of the 30-year-old wing, who brings a résumé packed with elite bucket-getting experience from the NBA, Spain, and Russia.

A product of the legendary Lower Merion High School program, Johnson blossomed into a dominant 20-point-per-game scorer at La Salle University before earning multiple call-ups with the Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, and Sacramento Kings. He is a prototypical modern wing who thrives in transition, creates his own shot out of isolation, and shoots the ball with effortless confidence from beyond the arc.

The PBA has historically favored imports who can single-handedly take over games from the perimeter, and Johnson fits that mold perfectly. His length and athleticism will immediately elevate a Phoenix squad looking to climb the standings and make a serious playoff push.

While their individual styles differ to a degree, both Darius Days and BJ Johnson share a remarkably similar blueprint as elite modern forwards who found their footing on the global basketball circuit. They stand as prime examples of the high-caliber talent currently circulating outside the NBA, and their contrasting approaches to the game will provide an excellent chess match for local fans.

Darius Days gives TNT a rock-solid foundation of strength and efficiency, while BJ Johnson hands Phoenix a dynamic, high-volume perimeter engine. Whether that will be good enough in the PBA is anyone’s guess.
