After the high of Saturday’s historic floor exercise medals, Carlos and Eldrew Yulo could not replicate the magic 24 hours later at the Asian Gymnastics Championships in Zunyi, China.

Carlos Yulo, fresh off his gold in the floor, came up short in both the horizontal and parallel bar finals. He managed only 13.500 points in the horizontal bar, well behind defending champion Chia-Hung Tang of Chinese Taipei, who posted 15.500. Eldrew Yulo nearly broke through but settled for fourth with 13.833—just outside the podium.

The double Olympic champion’s night worsened in the parallel bar final, where he finished sixth with 13.566. China’s Zhang Boheng ruled the event with 14.933.

Still, Carlos remained upbeat despite the double setback, choosing to highlight the rare feat he and Eldrew achieved together the day before. “Proud to represent the Philippines and grateful for everyone who continues to support this journey,” he wrote on Instagram. He added, “Thank you to my coaches, family, and everyone who believed in me through every high and low.”

Carlos and Eldrew Yulo Showcase What Could Be Bright Future

Saturday had been a breakthrough moment for Philippine gymnastics—Carlos striking gold with 14.700, Eldrew claiming bronze with 14.300. Two brothers, one podium, one event. Sunday, however, was a reminder of how unforgiving the sport can be.

The Yulos leave Zunyi with medals in hand but also with the sting of narrowly missing out again. For Carlos, it was a missed chance to add to his tally. For Eldrew, it was a glimpse of how close he is to breaking through.

The story of the weekend is not just about what they lost, but what they gained—proof that Philippine gymnastics now has two Yulos capable of standing tall on the Asian stage.
