The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially entered the knockout stage, with the expanded 48-team field now cut down to 32.
For the first time in World Cup history, the tournament includes a Round of 32. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups advanced automatically, while the eight best third-placed teams also moved on to the knockout stage.

How Does the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 Work?
The 2026 World Cup features 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four.
Each team played three group-stage matches. The top two teams in every group automatically advanced, while the eight best third-placed teams also moved into the knockout stage.
That created a 32-team knockout bracket, beginning with the Round of 32 before moving into the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
How Were the Best Third-Placed Teams Decided?
The 12 third-placed teams were ranked against each other, with only the top eight advancing.
The ranking was based on points first, followed by goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary record if needed.
