Alex Eala carried on the finest season of her young career with another statement victory, defeating defending champion Leylah Fernandez of Canada, 6-2, 7-6(1), in the Round of 16 of the 2026 Mubadala DC Open on Thursday morning.
Just a day after rallying past Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, the 21-year-old Filipina produced yet another comeback—this time recovering from a daunting 5-1 deficit in the second set before dominating the tiebreak to secure her place in the quarterfinals.
Alex Eala Dominates the Opening Set
Eala wasted little time asserting herself against the seventh-seeded Canadian.
The world No. 28 broke Fernandez early to race to a 3-0 lead, dictating rallies from the baseline while forcing the defending champion into a string of errors. Fernandez struggled to find rhythm throughout the opener, committing 14 unforced errors compared to just 4 by Eala.
Although Fernandez managed to save a break point midway through the set, Eala remained composed and protected her serve before breaking once more in the eighth game to wrap up the opening frame in just 35 minutes, 6-2.
It was another polished display from the Filipina, whose consistency and disciplined shot selection kept the former US Open finalist on the defensive from the opening point.
Alex Eala Erases 5-1 Deficit
The momentum shifted dramatically in the second set.
After the players split the opening two games, Fernandez finally found her range. The Canadian survived a grueling multi-deuce service game before breaking Eala’s serve and reeling off five consecutive games to build what looked like an insurmountable 5-1 advantage.
Instead of forcing a deciding set, however, Eala delivered one of the most impressive comebacks of her career.
She held serve to stay alive before breaking Fernandez twice during a remarkable five-game run to seize a stunning 6-5 lead. Fernandez managed to force a tiebreak by breaking back, but by then the momentum had completely shifted.
Eala took complete control of the breaker, racing to a 3-0 advantage before winning four of the final five points. She fittingly ended the match with back-to-back forehand winners, sealing a dominant 7-1 tiebreak victory after one hour and 53 minutes.
Quarterfinals-Bound
With the victory, Alex Eala advanced to her second WTA 500 quarterfinal of the season and continued her outstanding North American hard-court campaign.
The win also marked Eala’s second straight triumph over a defending champion, following her memorable upset of reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek earlier this month. It further avenged her straight-set loss to Fernandez at the Stuttgart Open in April, leveling their head-to-head series at one victory apiece.
The Rafa Nadal Academy graduate now awaits the winner between world No. 10 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine and qualifier Polina Kudermetova for a place in the semifinals. Should Svitolina advance, it would set up an intriguing rematch as the Filipina defeated the Ukrainian in the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open earlier this season.
