Alex Eala overcame a frustrating opening set to defeat Australia’s Talia Gibson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 WTA 500 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan, on Wednesday evening.

Eala initially struggled to contain Gibson’s aggressive returning and powerful groundstrokes, with the world No. 38 keeping pace through the opening seven games.

The Australian eventually broke through in the eighth game with a backhand winner to establish a 5-3 advantage. The world No. 19 immediately responded by breaking Gibson’s serve to love, extending the opening-set battle.

However, the Filipina could not sustain her momentum, committing consecutive errors in the 10th game before Gibson benefited from a forehand that clipped the net cord and landed on Eala’s side to secure the first set, 6-4.

Despite the setback, Eala had already produced four aces in the opener and remained within striking distance.

Alex Eala Dominates Second and Third Sets

Eala immediately shifted the momentum in the second set, breaking Gibson in the opening game before holding serve to establish a 2-0 lead.

The Australian attempted to regain control, collecting two of the next three games to narrow the deficit to 3-2, but the Filipina maintained her aggressive approach and continued putting pressure on her opponent.

The 21-year-old created another break opportunity in the fifth game, although Gibson managed to save it and stay within reach. The Filipina eventually pulled away, extending her advantage to 5-2 before overcoming a tense service game to close out the set, 6-2, and force a decider.

With confidence restored, Eala took complete control in the third set, breaking Gibson early and stringing together consecutive games to build an insurmountable lead.

The 22-year-old Aussie attempted to extend the contest in the sixth game, forcing three deuces and saving a match point, but successive errors prevented her from mounting a comeback. Eala remained composed, earned another match point, and sealed the 6-0 set with a decisive forehand that Gibson could not return.

The victory was highlighted by a career-best nine aces, surpassing her previous personal record of eight, which she recorded against Donna Vekic at the Berlin Open in June.

Alex Eala Gets Rematch Against Diana Shnaider

The victory marked Eala’s first quarterfinal appearance since capturing her maiden WTA singles title at the Mubadala DC Open on August 1 and provided a timely boost following consecutive second-round exits during the Asian swing.

After opening her Tokyo campaign with a victory over British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic, the Filipina secured back-to-back wins on tour for the first time during this stretch of the season.

Standing between Alex Eala and a place in the semifinals is familiar opponent Diana Shnaider of Russia, the tournament’s third seed and world No. 13.

Shnaider advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three sets, setting up another meeting with the Filipina just days after their encounter at the Ningbo Open in China.
