The De La Salle University Lady Spikers outlasted the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, 25-23, 20-25, 28-30, 27-29, to have the twice-to-beat advantage in the final four in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
In sets three and four, the Lady Spikers were down by a few points, but the girls from Taft showed heart and grit to win the match.
“Pinakita lang ng mga bata ‘yung puso na gusto nilang manalo, kaya siguro ganon ‘yung naging resulta. Sabi nga namin sa kanila, hindi pa tapos ‘yung laban, kaya pa natin dumikit. Bakit hindi natin tiyagain na kunin natin itong set at panalo na ito? Hanggang hindi umabot sa 25 points ‘yung kalaban, huwag kayong bibitaw, kapitan niyo,” Lady Spikers assistant coach Noel Orcullo said after the match.
At the end of two rounds of eliminations, the Lady Spikers and the Golden Tigresses were tied with an identical 9-5 win-loss record, alongside the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws.
The Lady Tamaraws settled for fourth place due to set ratio, and the Lady Spikers and the Golden Tigresses had a playoff match to determine who would get the twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs.
