The Converge FiberXers sent off the Macau Giant Pandas with another massive loss, this time a 162-108 clobbering at the Ynares Center in Antipolo as the PBA Governors’ Cup continued on Friday. The win improves the FiberXers’ record to 7-4, in a tie with the TNT Tropang 5G in Group A. The loss means Macau will end its PBA stint with a 2-10 slate.
What Happened?
Converge opened the game with a 9-0 blitz, and the rout was on as the FiberXers used that strong start to build a 41-19 advantage after one. Macau, though, showed some signs of life in the second, firing 33 points as its offense got untracked. However, the Giant Pandas couldn’t get stops as they allowed Converge to score 38 of its own to take a 79-52 lead into halftime.
The FiberXers next served up another 40-point quarter in the third, outscoring Macau, 40-26, to break the game wide open, 119-78, heading into the final frame. Converge then finished with a flourish, firing 43 big points in the fourth quarter to hang a 54-point beating on the Giant Pandas, who lost their final four games in the PBA by 60, 19, 55, and 54 points, respectively.
Who Stood Out?
How about everyone for Converge? Yes, it was that kind of night for the FiberXers as all but one of the 15 players fielded scored at least a basket. Leading the way, though, was Cameron Clark, who missed just one of his 15 attempts en route to a team-high 32 points. Juan Gomez de Liaño, meanwhile, recorded his second triple-double in the restart after finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. Justine Baltazar had a near triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists, while frontcourt mate Justin Arana had a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double.
For Macau, Kobey Lam played one of his better games in his PBA career as he exploded for 49 big points on top of 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Oscar Lopez Jr. backed him up with 27 points and 9 rebounds.
3 Keys to the Game
- Depth and talent. As was the case in Macau’s 60-point loss to the NLEX Road Warriors and 55-point beating at the hands of TNT, the FiberXers just had too much talent and firepower. That difference in talent showed as even Converge’s second stringers outscored the Giant Pandas’ starters, 98-95.
- Paint scoring. Converge got into the lane repeatedly on Friday, so much so that it scored 110 big points in the paint. Some were off Arana and Clark playing bully ball down low, a few came from dribble drives, and plenty were from fastbreak baskets.
- Sharing the ball. The FiberXers shared the ball all game long as they notched a franchise record 53 assists to highlight their team game for the entire 48 minutes. Macau, in contrast, finished with only 16 assists.
