Joshua Retamar is set to make Philippine volleyball history after signing with Ordu VK of Azerbaijan for the 2026–27 season, becoming the first Filipino player to compete as an import in the European Cup.
The Filipino setter is scheduled to leave for Azerbaijan on August 11 to begin preparations with Ordu VK ahead of the new season.
A Potential Starring Role?
His early arrival will allow him to integrate into the team’s system before official competitions begin—a crucial step for a setter, whose role centers on directing the offense, building chemistry with hitters, and establishing on‑court timing and communication.
According to his management, negotiations with the Azerbaijani club had been ongoing for several months, with Ordu VK identifying Retamar as a key addition to lead its offense.
“This is a dream come true and a challenge that I’m truly excited to embrace,” Retamar said.
“Playing in Europe has always been one of my aspirations because it allows me to compete against some of the best players in the world and continue growing as an athlete. While I may be wearing the colors of Ordu Sports Club, I know that I will still be carrying the Philippines with me on another playing field.”

Retamar Focuses on Creating Chemistry
Retamar’s management, Virtual Playground, emphasized the importance of joining the club before the season opens, noting that a setter’s effectiveness depends heavily on developing chemistry with teammates.
“For a setter, joining the team ahead of the season is extremely important. Building chemistry with teammates cannot be rushed, and Joshua’s early arrival will allow him to fully integrate into the team’s system before official competitions begin,” the agency said.
