Niña Ytang’s impressive run with Alas Pilipinas in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup continues to earn recognition, this time from one of Asia’s top volleyball stars.
Following South Korea’s 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 victory over the Philippines on Tuesday, South Korean captain Kang Sohwi singled out Ytang as one of the players who stood out during the match.
Kang Commends Ytang’s Speed and Spirit
Speaking through an interpreter during the postgame press conference, Kang praised the former University of the Philippines middle blocker for her speed and competitiveness.
“Number 9, the middle blocker, she’s really fast. Her fighting spirit… it was very impressive,” said Kang, who finished with a game-high 19 points to help South Korea remain unbeaten in Pool A.
Ytang once again delivered a solid performance for Alas Pilipinas, tallying 8 points on 7 attacks and 1 block.
Ytang’s Impact in Spirited Third Set
The 24-year-old middle blocker played a key role in the Philippines’ spirited third-set stand, helping the hosts build a 20-18 advantage before South Korea responded with a decisive late run to complete the straight-set victory.
Despite the loss, Ytang continued her steady tournament campaign. The four-time UAAP Best Middle Blocker has emerged as one of Alas Pilipinas’ most consistent performers after opting to withdraw from the 2026 PVL Draft to focus on national team duties.
Through four matches, she has averaged 9.75 points per game while providing a reliable presence at the net for the Philippine side.
Kang Notes Philippines’ Progress
Kang also commended the overall progress of the Philippine program, noting how much the team has improved in recent years.
“Compared to before, I can feel the Philippines, as a team, has improved a lot. Since most of the Asian teams are at a pretty equal level right now,” she said.
Ytang Motivated by Recognition
For Ytang, the recognition from one of Asia’s premier outside hitters serves as motivation to keep improving and contributing to the national team.
“I must be doing something right kaya siguro ganun. Pero for me naman, I’m just doing my best, doing everything I can para sa bayan,” Ytang told One Sports.
“Ino-offer ko lahat ng kaya kong gawin para sa lahat ng sumusuporta.”
The Philippines dropped to 2-2 in Pool A following the defeat and now faces a crucial match against Chinese Taipei as it fights to keep its semifinal hopes alive.
