Steph Curry Makes Power Move, Signs With Global Brand Li-Ning for Big ‘Challenge’

Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors is no longer a sneaker free agent.

In a move that has completely shaken the sneaker world, Curry is shunning bigger names and stepping into a massive new partnership with Chinese sportswear powerhouse Li-Ning. The deal, reportedly worth more than $400 million over the next five years, gives Curry not just an equity stake but also his own independent line under the “Curry Global” banner. For the four-time NBA champion, it’s the end of a defining era with Under Armour and the start of something far bigger.

“This partnership is about breaking boundaries and elevating the game on a truly global scale,” Curry said. “Li-Ning has shown an incredible commitment to innovation, culture, and community. Having the opportunity to not only design performance footwear but to also have the creative freedom to build a global brand from the ground up is the exact challenge and legacy piece I was looking for at this stage of my career.”

Li-Ning’s founder, Li Ning, was just as emphatic. “Stephen Curry is a generational icon who has changed how basketball is played worldwide. We are honored to welcome him to the family. Together, we will fuse Stephen’s unmatched basketball DNA with our rich heritage of design and innovation to inspire the next generation of athletes globally.”

What Is Li-Ning?

Founded in 1990 by the Olympic gymnast who lit the torch at the 2008 Beijing Games, Li-Ning has long been China’s premier sportswear brand. Its breakthrough moment in basketball came in 2012 when it signed Dwyane Wade away from Jordan Brand, launching the “Way of Wade” line and proving it could compete at the highest level. Known for its advanced cushioning technology and bold designs that blur the line between performance and streetwear, Li-Ning has steadily built credibility in the global basketball market.

At the moment, Li-Ning is mostly China-centric, with domestic sales competing with Anta and Nike. Globally, Li-Ning isn’t at the level of Nike and adidas just yet; it isn’t even in that stratosphere. But it is starting to develop a more global fanbase and reputation for combining technology, functionality, and loud fashion in its sneakers. Overall, Li-Ning as a brand is doing okay with modest growth and a healthy balance sheet, but its global footprint is still emerging and small-scale. Success abroad will determine if it can evolve from a China powerhouse into a true international contender.

That’s where Curry could come in.

Curry and Li-Ning: A Mutually Beneficial Collaboration

Curry’s move now takes that credibility to another level. For Under Armour, losing him is a crushing blow—he was the face of their basketball division since 2013, the player who gave them relevance in the sneaker wars. For Li-Ning, it’s a coup that positions them as the uncontested leader in the Chinese market, where basketball reigns supreme and Curry is adored by millions of fans.

More than that, the deal signals a shift in how athletes approach business. Curry isn’t just signing an endorsement contract; he’s building a brand with ownership and creative control. It’s the same blueprint Michael Jordan and Dwyane Wade followed, ensuring his influence will last long after his playing days are over.

This isn’t just about sneakers. It’s about power, reach, and legacy—and Curry has just rewritten the rules.
