How Does the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 Work?
The 2026 World Cup features 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four.
Each team plays three group-stage matches. The top two teams in every group automatically advance, while the eight best third-placed teams also move into the knockout stage.
That creates a 32-team knockout bracket, beginning with the Round of 32 before moving into the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
How Are the Best Third-Placed Teams Decided?
The third-place race is one of the most important parts of the new format.
The 12 third-placed teams will be compared, with only eight advancing to the Round of 32. Points, goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary record can all become important in deciding which teams survive.
Because of that, even a late goal in the final group match could decide whether a team reaches the knockout stage or goes home.
