Kenneth Llover, John Riel Casimero Headline Massive Fight Card for Filipino Boxing in Japan

Filipino prizefighters Kenneth Llover and John Riel Casimero will both step into the ring Saturday in Japan against different opponents—and while they share a card, the stakes could not be more different for each man.

Kenneth Llover Primed for Title Shot

For Llover, this is the moment his career has been building toward.

The undefeated Filipino bantamweight successfully made weight—tipping the scales at 117.7 pounds on his second attempt—and is set to face Michael Angeletti in an IBF bantamweight championship eliminator that represents the biggest fight of his young professional life. Angeletti came in at 117.5 pounds, and both men are heading into the bout with perfect records intact: Llover at 17-0 with 12 knockouts, Angeletti at 14-0 with 8.

The staredown at the weigh-in said everything. Neither man broke eye contact—not even after being separated. Llover’s promotional team, Gerrypens Promotions, posted the footage on Facebook with a message that needed no elaboration: “Kenneth Llover is READY for tomorrow.”

Win this fight, and Llover puts himself in line for a shot at the IBF bantamweight title. It is the kind of opportunity that defines careers—the eliminator that separates contenders from champions. At 17-0, with power in his hands and the composure of a fighter who has not tasted defeat, Llover has every reason to believe Saturday night is his to take.

John Riel Casimero and the Comeback Trail

Casimero’s story is a different one—and a more complicated one.

The pride of Ormoc, Leyte steps into the ring against Luis Nery of Mexico in a 10-round, 124-pound catchweight bout that carries a different kind of significance. This is not Casimero at the peak of his powers chasing another world title. This is Casimero, at 35-5-1 with 24 knockouts, working to remind the boxing world that he is still very much a factor.

The fight should have happened earlier at the Gazprom Sports Complex in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan but was postponed due to escalating instability in the Middle East that posd considerable issues in travel, security, and event logistics. Now, the day of reckoning for both veterans is finally here. Casimero made weight—56 kilograms, or 123.4 pounds—which in itself is a good sign for a fighter whose career has been marked by weight issues and disrupted by off-ring issues and inactivity. Nery, a heavy-handed Mexican with a 37-2 record and 28 knockouts, came in over the agreed limit at 127.2 pounds, but the fight will proceed as a catchweight contest.

Nery’s weight overage is a footnote. The bigger picture for Casimero is the performance—a convincing showing against a legitimate opponent would go a long way toward re-establishing his relevance in the super bantamweight division and keeping alive the dream of adding another world title to a career that has had its share of peaks and valleys.

Two Filipinos—Kenneth Llover and John Riel Casimero. Two missions. One night in Japan.
