It was a short and sweet journey for Alex Eala and Venus Williams as their promising partnership came to an end after bowing out in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Bad Homburg Open women’s doubles tournament in Germany.

Not more than 24 hours after getting their first victory together as a duo, the Filipino-American tandem absorbed a 6-3, 6-2 defeat against second-seeded pair Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia and Olivia Nicholls of Great Britain on Thursday evening.

Momentum Swings After Competitive Opening

Eala and Williams showed early promise in the opening set, briefly taking control at 2-1 and later moving ahead 3-2 after holding serve. However, Mihalikova and Nicholls responded with sharp net play and consistent returns that gradually shifted momentum in their favor.

With the score tied at 3-3, the Slovak-British duo elevated their level and captured three consecutive games to secure the first set in 38 minutes.

Their ability to capitalize on break-point opportunities proved decisive, while Eala and Williams struggled to convert their own chances.

Second-Seeded Duo Pulls Away to Seal Victory

The experienced second seeds continued their strong form in the next set, quickly racing to a 2-0 advantage. Eala and Williams managed to answer with a break of serve to cut the deficit to 2-1, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

But the 2026 HSBC Championships doubles winners immediately regained control, breaking back after a costly double fault and extending their lead to 3-1.

From there, the world No. 29 duo maintained relentless pressure with accurate placement, excellent volleying, and composed service games. They widened the gap to 5-1 and moved within one game of victory.

Williams helped keep the contest alive by holding serve for 5-2, and the pair even saved a match point before the second seeds finally closed out the win after one hour and 20 minutes on Center Court.

The victory sent Mihalikova and Nicholls into the semifinals, where they will face Demi Schuurs and Ellen Perez.

Valuable Experience Before Wimbledon

Despite the defeat, the tournament provided valuable preparation for Eala as she heads to Wimbledon for her second consecutive main-draw appearance.

The 21-year-old Filipina arrives at Wimbledon as the No. 29 seed, making history as the first Filipina player to earn a Grand Slam singles seeding.

For Williams, the event served as another step in her return to competition. The former world No. 1 is set to reunite with sister Serena Williams in doubles at Wimbledon, where the legendary siblings have captured six women’s doubles titles together.

Although their partnership in Bad Homburg lasted only two matches, Eala and Williams delivered one of the tournament’s memorable storylines and drew strong support from fans throughout the week.
