Cape Verde entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the third smallest nation by population—about 525,000 inhabitants—to make it to the big dance. Whatever happens next, they have already secured their place in history as the smallest country ever to reach the knockout stage. The two previous smallest nations, Curaçao and Iceland, both bowed out after the group stage in their lone appearances—Curaçao in this World Cup and Iceland in 2018.
It is one of the feel-good stories of a World Cup already brimming with them—and there are still plenty more matches to play.
How Cape Verde Made History
The island nation off the western coast of Africa achieved what seemed like an impossible dream after holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw in their group finale in Houston on Friday (Saturday in the Philippines).
“We are small, but we have big hearts and we are fighters,” said Vozinha, Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, who has himself become one of the tournament’s uplifting stories.
World Cup debutants, Cape Verde stunned early by holding title favorite Spain to a scoreless draw. They followed it up by scoring their first-ever World Cup goals in a 2-2 tie against Uruguay. Then came the 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, which left them undefeated on three points. That effort was enough to secure second place in Group H behind 2010 champion Spain and a point ahead of two-time winners Uruguay, who were eliminated after losing to Spain.
“The team was very eager to show this to the whole world,” Cape Verde coach Bubista said while draped in his country’s flag. “We are proud of having arrived at this stage. We have shown that we are a small country, but that we fight for the things that we want to achieve.”
Next Stop: Defending Champions
Cape Verde’s fairy tale run continues on July 4 in Miami, where they will face defending champions Argentina. Whatever the outcome, the island nation has already carved its name into World Cup history—and shown the world the size of their fight.
