Amid the uncertainty surrounding Philippine volleyball’s governing body, Alas Pilipinas Women will still be able to compete in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup beginning Saturday in Candon City, Ilocos Sur.

Alas Pilipinas received clearance to participate despite the ongoing turmoil within the Philippine National Volleyball Federation, which was recently suspended by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) over governance concerns currently under investigation.

Leading the Philippine campaign are veterans Alyssa Valdez, Thea Gagate, and Trisha Tubu, with former National University star Alyssa Solomon joining the squad after withdrawing from the 2026 PVL Draft to focus on national team duties and overseas opportunities.

The team will be handled by interim head coach Shaq Delos Santos, with the final 14-player roster set to be confirmed during Friday’s preliminary inquiry.

“Life goes on in volleyball, and we’re here to help make sure the athletes and the programs are brought back to intense levels,” said Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.

Governance Challenges and Oversight

The assurance comes as Philippine volleyball navigates one of the most significant governance challenges in its recent history.

Following the FIVB suspension, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) froze funding support for the PNVF, while the POC signaled that it would honor the world governing body’s decision and take the necessary steps in accordance with Olympic regulations.

To ensure continuity, the FIVB established an Ad Hoc Committee to temporarily oversee volleyball affairs in the country and guarantee the participation of Philippine athletes in international competitions.

Focus on Athletes and Alas Pilipinas

PSC chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio emphasized that the focus must remain on the athletes despite the issues surrounding the federation.

“Sports must never sleep; there mustn’t be lulls. Volleyball is coming of age, and that really comes with challenges. But this is the most important time to support our national athletes,” Gregorio said.

“No distractions. Play for the country with your hearts, Alas—PSC will always back you up.”

Significance of the AVC Women’s Cup

The AVC Women’s Cup marks the first major international tournament for Alas Pilipinas since the federation’s suspension, making the competition an important test both on and off the court.

AVC president Tats Suzara also welcomed the participating countries while expressing optimism for Philippine volleyball moving forward.

“I welcome the 12 teams for the AVC Women’s Cup. It’s another renaissance moving forward for Philippine volleyball,” Suzara said.

After the tournament in Candon, the spotlight will remain on the Philippines as the country hosts Week 2 of the Volleyball Nations League Women from June 17 to 21 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, featuring powerhouses Japan, Italy, the United States, Serbia, the Dominican Republic, and the Czech Republic.
