Alex Eala’s 2026 French Open singles campaign came to an early end after the Filipina tennis star bowed to close friend and former doubles partner Iva Jovic, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round at Roland Garros on Tuesday night. The match immediately delivered an intense start as Eala and Jovic battled through a gripping opening game that lasted nearly 10 minutes.
Eala had early opportunities to grab momentum after earning break points, but Jovic managed to hold serve and eventually settled into rhythm behind her powerful forehand and aggressive baseline play.
The turning point of the opening set came after a tightly contested fourth game that stretched through multiple deuces. Jovic eventually converted the break to establish a 3-1 advantage before continuing her surge to a commanding 5-1 lead.
The American consistently dictated rallies from the baseline, forcing Eala onto the defensive and limiting the Filipina’s chances to attack.
Alex Eala Mounts Late Fightback in Set 1
Just when the opening set appeared headed for a quick finish, Alex Eala found a way back into the match. A series of untimely double faults from the 17th-seeded American opened the door for the Filipina, who capitalized by winning three consecutive games to trim the deficit to 5-4.
Eala’s improved returning and steadier shot-making briefly shifted the momentum in her favor as she threatened to complete a stunning comeback from four games down.
However, Jovic quickly regained control at the perfect time. The American broke Eala’s serve to love in the next game to close out the opening set after more than an hour of action.
Iva Jovic Pulls Away in Second Set
The 21-year-old Filipina attempted to carry her momentum into the second frame and struck first with an early service break for a 1-0 lead. But the 18-year-old American responded immediately with a break of her own before holding serve to move ahead, 2-1.
The two players traded games early in the set, with Eala leveling the score at 2-2 after a composed hold. That proved to be the Filipina’s final push of the match.
From there, Jovic completely took over, winning the next four games behind sharp returning, powerful forehands, and consistent serving to complete the straight-set victory.
The American finished the match with a significant edge in winners and controlled most of the baseline exchanges throughout the contest.
