Alexandra “Alex” Eala introduced herself to the big stage of tennis in 2025 after her remarkable run at the WTA 1000 Miami Open. This year, fans aren’t just discovering her—they’re remembering exactly who she is. With her first WTA-level title at the Mubadala DC Open, Eala has firmly established herself as one of the rising stars of the Women’s Tennis Association, or WTA.

The Prelude: Alex Eala Shows Potential in 2025

The Quezon City native began the 2025 season ranked No. 147 and finished at No. 50. During her Miami Open campaign, she defeated Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Świątek.

She also became the first Filipina in the Open Era to win a main-draw match at the US Open, defeating Clara Tauson. For her Grand Slam debut, she added appearances at Wimbledon and the French Open.

Eala reached her first WTA 125 final at the Eastbourne Open, falling to Maya Joint but showing early promise on grass. Later that year, she captured her first WTA title at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico.

To an extent, 2025 wasn’t just Alex Eala’s introduction—it was her announcement. Deep tournament runs and breakthrough victories over elite players signaled that championship appearances were only the beginning.

Alex Eala Makes a Leap in 2026

Critics suggested Alex Eala’s 2025 success might be a fluke. Eala silenced them by winning even more matches in 2026.

She competed in the Australian Open and French Open, but her grass-court campaign stood out. Across five tournaments—the Birmingham Open, Queen’s Club Championships, Berlin Tennis Open, Bad Homburg Open, and Wimbledon—she posted a 12-4 record.

She won the Birmingham Open, claiming her second WTA 125 trophy. At Wimbledon, she reached the fourth round, becoming the first Filipina in history to do so.

As of this writing, her growing list of upset victories includes wins over world No. 2 lena Rybakina, Naomi Osaka, Jasmine Paolini, Leylah Fernandez, reigning Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, and world No. 3 JeEssica Pegula. The highlight came at the Mubadala DC Open, where she captured her first WTA 500 title after outlasting Pegula in three sets.

That triumph pushed her into another historic milestone: rising all the way to world No. 20. This feat made her the first Filipina to reach that mark.

Alex Eala Out to Make More History

So far, Alex Eala has won 37 of 56 matches this year, with notable wins over ranked opponents throughout the season. Her two titles and deep run at Wimbledon are also noteworthy, as they are proof that the young Filipina really is for real. Sure, Eala momentum got snapped by a Round of 16 exit at the WTA 1000 National Bank Open, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that she’s no longer just hype but an actual threat in every tournament she plays in.

Now, the challenge is for Alex Eala to maintain a consistently high level of play and to prove even more that she truly is deserving of the attention she is getting. And she can only do that by winning… and winning…. and winning some more. She has done that this season so far. She can do more of it for sure.

Alex Eala will look to put an exclamation point to a strong season with a final push to end 2026, starting at this week’s Cincinnati Open. She will then be off to the season’s final Grand Slam, the US Open, after which the Singapore Open beckons.
