The NU Bulldogs once again ruled the collegiate volleyball scene after defeating the FEU Tamaraws, 26-24, 25-22, 25-22, in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 88 Men’s Volleyball Finals at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
With the victory, the Bulldogs completed a historic six-peat dating back to Season 80 and captured their eighth championship under head coach Dante Alinsunurin.
“Sobrang happy talaga sa ginusto namin dahil nakuha namin yung six-peat. Hindi namin namalayan na makukuha namin ito kasi first round at second round talaga, nag-struggle kami pagdating sa eliminations talaga,” said Alinsunurin.
“Sobrang thankful ako na nakuha namin ito at sa players ko sa tiwala na binigay sa amin, at sa coaches na sumuporta sa amin, at mga players na palaging nandiyan.”
NU Shows Championship Form
Despite entering the postseason as the second seed after a turbulent elimination round, NU rediscovered its championship form at the perfect time, winning three straight playoff matches to extend its dynasty.
The Bulldogs seized control late in the third set after turning a slim 18-16 lead into a commanding advantage behind Finals MVP Leo Ordiales.
Ordiales scored four straight points in a decisive stretch that gave NU a 22-18 cushion before Jade Disquitado pushed the Bulldogs to championship point with a powerful crosscourt attack.
FEU attempted one final rally, but Obed Mukaba delivered the title-clinching quick attack to seal the victory in 1 hour and 28 minutes.
Disquitado chipped in 13 points and 15 excellent receptions, while Buds Buddin contributed 8 points and 17 excellent receptions.
Team captain Peng Taguibolos chipped in 7 points, highlighted by 5 blocks, while Mukaba finished with 6 points.
On the other side, the Tamaraws settled for a bridesmaid finish for the second consecutive season despite finishing the eliminations as the top seed.
Mikko Espartero led FEU with 17 points, while Amet Bituin added 10 points and 9 excellent receptions. Dryx Saavedra was limited to 8 points, while Best Setter Ariel Cacao finished with 11 excellent sets.
