The Philippine Men’s U‑23 National Football Team suffered a 2‑0 defeat to Vietnam on Friday afternoon at the CS Asset Minato Soccer Stadium in Nagoya, Japan. The loss means the Philippines are out of the men’s football tournament in the 20th Asian Games.
Coming off a 5‑1 loss to Uzbekistan in their opening Group C match, the Philippines produced a much stronger defensive performance and managed to keep Vietnam from scoring throughout the first half.
Goalkeeper Nicholas Guimarães was particularly busy, making several saves as Vietnam controlled more of the possession. Despite the Vietnamese pressure, the Philippines remained organized and entered halftime with the score still level at 0‑0.
Vietnam Breaks Through After the Break
The Philippine Men’s U‑23 National Football Team continued to hold its ground after the restart, but Vietnam eventually found the breakthrough in the 74th minute.
Nguyễn Thanh Nhàn received a long ball from a teammate and managed to get behind the Philippine defense before calmly lifting his finish over Guimarães to put Vietnam ahead, 1‑0.
The goal forced the Philippines to push forward in search of an equalizer, and it nearly paid off moments later.
Santi Rublico Misses a Golden Opportunity
The Filipinos came agonizingly close to leveling the match in the 85th minute.
Sandro Reyes’ attempt took a deflection before Santi Rublico got a touch on the loose ball near the goal. However, Rublico’s effort went wide, missing a crucial opportunity to bring the Philippines back into the contest.
Vietnam quickly punished the missed chance.
Substitute Nguyễn Lê Phát initially saw his attempt hit the crossbar, but he reacted quickly to head the rebound into the net in the 87th minute, giving Vietnam a 2‑0 lead and effectively putting the result beyond reach.
Garrath McPherson Looks Toward Final Match
The defeat left the Philippines without a point after two matches and effectively ended its hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Vietnam moved to four points, while the remaining Group C standings depended on the Uzbekistan‑Kuwait result.
Head coach Garrath McPherson nevertheless highlighted the progress he saw against Vietnam.
“It’s hard to be happy right now. I think we’re all suffering. We know Vietnam are a good team and finalists in the last U23 Asian Cup, so they possess quality,” he said during a post‑game interview conference.
“We’ve had the opportunity to play against Vietnam now in the regional tournaments, AFF and SEA Games, and in the last two semifinals. We are getting close [to them],” coach McPherson added.
The Australian head coach also pointed to physical conditioning as an area the team needs to improve.
“I wouldn’t say fading late, because today we didn’t fade late, but perhaps the levels of physical conditioning start to impact late in games or late in halves, changes of force because players are cramping and need to come out. This impacts how you finish a game,” he said.
The Philippines will close its Asian Games campaign against Kuwait on Tuesday, September 22, at 1 p.m., aiming to secure its first victory in the tournament.
