Jimmy Alapag the basketball player is a legend in the Philippines. Jimmy Alapag the coach is just getting started.
The many-time Gilas Pilipinas point guard—a.k.a. The Mighty Mouse, a.k.a. The Captain—is coming home to the Philippines, and he will finally be getting the chance to man the sidelines as head coach of a PBA team: the NLEX Road Warriors.
No less than Manny Pangilinan, Chair of the MVP Group of Companies, led the contract signing on Monday that made official Alapag’s entry as NLEX coach. He will replace veteran tactician Jong Uichico, who has helmed the Road Warriors since 2024. The six-time champion led NLEX to four quarterfinals appearances and the first seed in the last PBA Commissioner’s Cup before falling to the TNT Tropang 5G in the quarters.
“Coach Jimmy brings valuable experience from an NBA organization, a strong basketball philosophy, and a player-centered approach that we believe can help elevate the team to the next level,” the Road Warriors said in a statement. “This move is about strengthening the program, combining fresh perspectives with continuity, and giving ourselves the best opportunity to achieve our goal of becoming a championship-caliber team.”
Alapag Brings Glowing Credentials Already
While Alapag will be a rookie head coach in the PBA, his coaching résumé is actually quite extensive already—and even impressive. The Captain began his coaching career as an assistant coach to Gilas Pilipinas and then as team consultant of the Meralco Bolts, the team he last played for before retiring in 2016.
He then got his big coaching break in 2017 in the now-defunct ABL, where he led the San Miguel Corporation-backed Alab Pilipinas in his debut season in 2017–18. A failed defense followed the next season before the pandemic shut down the ABL in 2020. At around this time, Alapag was also serving as assistant coach to Gilas and the San Miguel Beermen in the PBA.
The Captain next packed his bags and left for the US, where he got an opportunity of a lifetime as lead assistant of the Sacramento Kings’ NBA G League affiliate, the Stockton Kings. He was then promoted to the main NBA roster under head coach Mike Brown and worked on skill refinement, mentoring young players, and contributing to the organization’s development systems. In all, Alapag spent about six years with the Kings organization before parting ways in April 2026.
Will Alapag’s Coaching Pedigree Translate?
The likely answer is yes. Alapag is no stranger to coaching, having accumulated a decade’s worth of it in various capacities—as assistant, as head coach, and as player development coach. He has also learned from the best, picking the brains of coaches like Chot Reyes, Leo Austria, and Tim Cone on local shores, and of Mike Brown in the NBA.
For context, LA Tenorio has made the quarterfinals in each of his first two conferences as the Magnolia Hotshots’ rookie head coach—and his coaching experience isn’t as extensive as that of his Gilas Pilipinas backcourt mate. So, if Tinyente can achieve a modicum of success and show promise even with limited coaching experience, there’s little doubt that The Captain, with his years of experience that include a lengthy stop in the best league in the world, will find success, too.
Then again, Alapag’s success in the PBA is probably contingent on one critical factor: his ability to build a team that fits his vision. Yeng Guiao, in his time with NLEX, couldn’t do it as he lost key players one after the other, including an in-his-prime Poy Erram, an emerging Kiefer Ravena, and a young Calvin Oftana.
Now, as Alapag takes the reins from Uichico, he inherits some cornerstones in Robert Bolick, Schonny Winston, Kevin Alas, JB Bahio, and Ljay Gonzales. The question is, will he get carte blanche authority to keep the players he wants and to go after the pieces he needs? Will the MVP Group fully support The Captain’s team-building philosophy, whatever that may be?
An Exciting Time for the PBA
Whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain: having a legend in Pinoy hoops should be a welcome development to the PBA, which appears to be building some genuine momentum after two successful conferences in Season 50.
And, with Alapag back, expect NLEX to become a crowd favorite and draw considerable fan interest, as The Captain is one of the most popular and beloved players local basketball has seen. It would be even better if he can win at this level.
